UPCOMING VIRTUAL DEMOS

OFFERED LIVE THROUGH ZOOM

WHAT:  PAINTING WHITE STRUCTURES AND OBJECTS

WHEN:  Friday, January 22, 2021 from 10am to 11:30am
*Zoom meeting will open at 9:45am for those who wish to log in early.

COST:  Members $8

White subjects are often anything but white—yet they appear white when painted using colors that are around them. Varying values and employing complementary colors creates the illusion of brightness.

Alex will paint in watercolor as she demonstrates some of the methods to create the illusion of white buildings, flowers and objects in a landscape.

The color mixing and application is the same for all media.  Paint in your medium of choice.

WHAT:  JEWEL-LIKE TRANSPARENCY IN OILS & ACRYLICS

WHEN:  Friday, January 29, 2021 from 10am to 11:30am
*Zoom meeting will open at 9:45am for those who wish to log in early.

COST:  Members $8
                      Non-Members $10

Oil and acrylic paintings can have that transparent—almost watercolor look– through the application of specific techniques and methods in conjunction with use of a paint medium.

Alex will demonstrate in fast-drying acrylics in order to cover a range of methods to obtain jewel-like, transparent results.

Paint along using a medium: gloss or matte medium for acrylics, or Liquin (a Winsor Newton product) for oils.

WHAT:  DYNAMIC SHAPES & COMPOSITION WITH EVERYDAY OBJECTS

WHEN:  Friday, February 5, 2021 from 10am to 11:30am
*Zoom meeting will open at 9:45am for those who wish to log in early.

COST:  Members $8
                      Non-Members $10

The surprise of seeing an everyday object dramatically placed to be the only subject in a painting, is a special event.  We often overlook the possibilities of ordinary objects because we think that we need to find a dramatic landscape or interior for our scene.

Alex will demonstrate how to use composition to show an ordinary object in a bold, dramatic way.

Come prepared to draw and paint in your medium of choice.

WHAT:  PAINTING NEGATIVE SPACE FOR POSITIVE EXCITING COMPOSITIONS

WHEN:  Friday, February 12, 2021 from 10am to 11:30am
*Zoom meeting will open at 9:45am for those who wish to log in early.

COST:  Members $8
                      Non-Members $10

Alex Sharma will demonstrate how exciting images can become by painting around the subject rather than painting it directly.  Your positive shapes will “pop” as you develop your composition and painting skills using this technique.

Alex will demonstrate in watercolor, but the concept is the same for all media.  Paint along in the medium of your choice.

WHAT:  UNDER PAINTING FOR OILS & ACRYLICS

WHEN:  Friday, February 19, 2021 from 10am to 11:30am
*Zoom meeting will open at 9:45am for those who wish to log in early.

COST:  Members $8
                      Non-Members $10

If you paint in oils or acrylics and have wondered about the how-to and use of doing an under painting first, this demo is for you.

Just like drawing, under painting is an important step in perfecting a composition with balanced values before you begin to paint.  Drawing tells you that your objects are well placed and in proportion;  under painting puts in the dark and light values that you will need for a balanced, dynamic composition.

Alex will demonstrate in oils.  All you need to paint along is heavy paper, a brush, mineral spirits for thinning (water for acrylics) and a dark paint color like a dark blue or brown.

WHAT:  A LOOSE APPROACH TO PAINTING FOLIAGE

WHEN:  Friday, February 26, 2021 from 10am to 11:30am
*Zoom meeting will open at 9:45am for those who wish to log in early.

COST:  Members $8
                      Non-Members $10

Alex Sharma will demonstrate spontaneous, simplified methods for painting the flora of our landscape.

Surface and brush technique and color mixing to obtain a lively, realistic appearance will be our focus.

Alex will paint in watercolor but the techniques are the same for all media.  Paint along in the medium of your choice.

WHAT:  PALETTE KNIFE PAINTING FOR WATER & SKY IN OILS OR ACRYLICS

WHEN:  Friday, March 5, 2021 from 10am to 11:30am
*Zoom meeting will open at 9:45am for those who wish to log in early.

COST:  Members $8
                      Non-Members $10

We often think that the palette knife will only be useful for painting highly textured subjects of for working in a thick, impasto method.  Imagine beautiful, smooth water with reflections, and skies that have convincing looking clouds.

Once you learn how to hold and to load your palette knife with paint, these effects will seem to happen automatically as you paint.  Alex will demonstrate and you can paint along.

All you will need is oil or acrylic paint, a palette knife* and heavy drawing paper.   *The best type of palette knife is one with a trowel type handle (the metal part of the handle will have a bend in it—not straight.)

 WHAT:  COLOR THEORY FOR SHADOWS

*Zoom meeting will open at 9:45am for those who wish to log in early.

COST:  Members $8
                      Non-Members $10

Knowing what colors to mix to get shadows and light effects can be difficult at times.  Learn how to choose colors for shadows by mixing specific, colors that are present in your scene.

Alex will focus on the color wheel with a step-by-step approach to how shadows work. Learn how to use complementary colors, reflected colors and neutrals to achieve the right effect.

Come prepared to paint in your medium of choice.

There are some basic watercolor methods that give watercolor paintings luminous transparency.

Alex will demonstrate step-by-step, the methods and application of dry-brush, wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, transparent layering, and gradated washes.  She will also cover what to look for in the way of watercolor paper types and brushes.

Paint along with whatever watercolor paints you may have.

Discover how to design a scene—not just copy one.  As artists, we edit the image we see in order to obtain the effect we are seeking.

Alex will use a photo reference to demonstrate some of the ways we can simplify what we see and create a strong, bold, or subtle design using the elements of shape, color, contrast, rhythm, value, texture and line.

Draw or paint along in your medium of choice.
