Trees come in many shapes and varieties, and getting the “look” for up close or farther away can be a challenge. We can make this atmospheric perspective happen by painting loosely in some areas, and more tightly—or with additional detail—in others.

How to integrate the two painting different looks and make the trees work as a whole, is our goal.

The illusion of depth in a painting—whether non-objective or realistic—can be very dynamic and pleasing. This appearance is called atmospheric perspective and is used to make contours or objects appear 3-dimensional and to recede into the distance. This effect is obtained by changing values (lightness and darkness) of the color and by reducing the intensity of the color. in a 2-part demo,

Alex will demonstrate how to achieve this illusion of depth in both an abstract, and a landscape painting.

Alex will be using oils, but the methods and color mixings are the same for all painting media. Plan to paint in your medium of choice.
