Maureen Scullin

“PAINTING IS MY JOYFUL PLACE A PART OF WHAT’S IN MY SOUL, AND WILL ALWAYS BE”

MAUREEN SCULLIN, an award-winning oil painter, finds inspiration in the artistic complexities of producing original works. Her paintings, which include portraiture, figurative studies, landscapes, and still life. All works demonstrate a strong emphasis on the elements of color, light, realism and composition. With a lifelong connection to art, Maureen’s journey has taken her from illustration to the realm of fine art, where she continues to pursue her passion for creating beautiful paintings.

Maureen’s artistic journey is one of continuous growth, nurtured by her own dedicated study and enriched by occasional studies with renowned artists such as Dawn Whitelaw, Arthur Gain, and JJ Lang. Her home in Fuquay-Varina, NC, shared with her husband, Phil serves as her painting studio.

Maureen is a member of the Oil Painters of America, Cecilia Beaux Forum Member of Portrait Society of America, International Guild of Realism, Portrait Society of Atlanta, National Oil and Acrylic Painters’ Society and the Fine Arts League of Cary, NC

Her Origin Story

Maureen grew up in the Detroit area, then moved to the NYC area where she pursued graphics and illustration work, later moving to North Carolina where she currently works as a fine artist. Her work includes figurative pieces, portraits and many landscape settings. Her work depicts rich, colorful, and representational art on canvas. She masters the human figure in a painterly manner that brings the viewer into the painting making them want to know more about the subject.

Maureen’s greatest artistic influences include John Singer Sargent, Richard Schmid and most of all her dad.  She inherited her artistic abilities from her father who had gained recognition as a commercial artist in Detroit, Michigan. Her own personal art journey began in the Detroit area as well.  Maureen took art classes and apprenticed for her father, where he would spend hours mentoring her and passing on his wisdom on becoming a successful artist.

Maureen always says that her paintings are never really done, just on pause, because there is always more you can do to make them better. She believes that as an artist, you are never totally confident that your work is finished.  She feels that she can always improve and learn more. As an artist, this can create a bit of anxiety, but she believes doing what she loves is worth the journey.

Maureen believes that just as her father did for her, she should pass on his legacy by passing on the knowledge that he taught her. Much like Dan Fogelberg’s song “Leader of the Band” lyrics “but his blood runs through my instrument and his song is in my soul. My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man. I’m just a living legacy to the leader of the band.”

Maureen specializes in realistic fine art and portraits, with portrait commissions from clients around the United States

ARTIST STATEMENT

“In my work I strive to create a sense of movement throughout the painting. I use composition to give the paintings a more modern twist.  I begin my paintings by producing small sketches and color studies, arranging the shapes in the thumbnail sketches. I also work through the main values of the shapes, light and shadows. My goal for each painting is to lead the eye through the painting with directional movement.

In my current work I am playing with movement and color even more, hoping to set an immediate mood for the viewer. My work can be traditional in figurative realism, but more representational art with a contemporary twist.”
